Shiphay Manor

Shiphay Manor is a Manor house in Torquay, Devon, England.
==History==

Originally erected in around 1665, the manor was sold to William Kitson of Painsford in 1740, and then torn down and rebuilt in 1884.〔Percy Russell, ''A History Of Torquay'' (Torquay: Devonshire Press Limited, 1960), 168–169〕
Shiphay Manor is currently owned by Torquay Boys' Grammar School. The Manor recently underwent a refurbishment project and now houses the Art and Media Departments.
The building was formerly used to teach psychology to students of both Torquay Boys' Grammar School and Torquay Grammar School for Girls Sixth Forms.
During the 1960s and '70s part of the Manor house itself was used as a high class private members nightclub.
It was bought by the Mathews Brothers and many live groups performed there including the Empty Vessels later to become Wishbone Ash and it was very popular with the young yuppies who were beginning to arrive on the scene. It ran until the early '90s when the Brothers dissolved the club empire they built.
The expansive stable blocks along with the front, side and back paddocks were run as the highly successful Shiphay Manor riding school by popular local characters Mr & Mrs Heggadon in the 1960s/'70s.
